Life Technologies Employees 'Give Back' to Their Communities During Eighth Annual Global Volunteer Day

CARLSBAD, Calif., May 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ: LIFE) is proud to announce that over 3,800 of its employees worldwide are scheduled to donate a half day of their time to projects that benefit their communities as part of the company's eighth annual Global Volunteer Day.  Today, employees are performing more than 15,000 hours of community service at 48 sites in 26 countries.

"Global Volunteer Day has long been the cornerstone of our efforts to support and strengthen our communities," said Gregory T. Lucier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Life Technologies. "Even as we expand our philanthropic efforts each year, and encourage our employees to dedicate their time year-round to volunteer opportunities, this day of giving as a global team will continue to be one of the company's proudest citizenship achievements."

Last year, Life Technologies launched the 'Giving back at LIFE' initiative, an employee year-round volunteer program aimed at helping facilitate community service participation among Life Technologies' workforce, ultimately volunteering for more than 37,000 hours of community service outside of the company's corporate programs.

On Global Volunteer Day, Life Technologies provides each of its employees with a half day of paid time to participate in volunteer projects. Follow #LIFEGVD on to see real time updates from Life Technologies employees at locations around the world, helping out at service projects including:

United States:

  • Austin, TX –  Partnering with Habitat for Humanity
  • Carlsbad, CA – Science Fair and bike donations to Boys and Girls Club of Carlsbad
  • Frederick, MD – Beta testing science projects website for Science Buddies
  • Pleasanton, CA – Creating ribbons for the Global Genes Day through Children's Rare Disease Network

  • Shanghai, China – Rummage sale to benefit disabled children in need
  • Singapore – Housekeeping, gardening and engagement activities with adults with disabilities
  • Kiryat Shmona, Israel – Supply drive and renovating a home for at-risk-youth
  • Paisley, Scotland – Gardening and maintenance at a local cancer hospital

This year's Global Volunteer Day also marks the launch of a new hands-on science program the company plans to sponsor and incorporate into educational curricula throughout the U.S.  Life Technologies' long-term intention is to broaden this interactive program into schools throughout the world.

For the second year in a row, Life Technologies will host area students for Global Volunteer Day, where area school students from San Diego will participate in real-life biotechnology experiments activity and career discussions with a variety of Life Technologies professionals and will also participate in a resume review and practice job interviews hosted by the company's human resources team.

As San Diego High School science teacher Sara Dozier commented, "My biotechnology class visited Life Technologies last spring and the visit certainly made a lasting impression."  "The visit was incredibly important to the students and the individual activities, including resume work shopping, gel electrophoresis, career conversations and the tour, all impacted the students in different ways.  The experience inspired the students to strive for more than they ever thought possible for themselves."

"This is our ultimate goal for this new educational initiative – to bring science back into the classroom," added Lucier.  To not only educate but to inspire and hopefully instill a spirit of innovation and appreciation for the sciences for the next generation of scientists."

Lastly, the day would not be complete without the inaugural unveiling of the company's mascot – the Giving Gene.  Moving forward, Gene will be the face of 'Giving Back at LIFE,' making personal appearances throughout the communities where Life Technologies operates.

Life Technologies' community relations and corporate social responsibility efforts have been recognized by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, the Investor Relations Global Rankings, and in CRO Magazine's Top 100 corporate citizens.
