Les prix « BRAVE » de Shire définissent un aidant comme un individu qui offre des soins continus et constants à une autre personne, à titre bénévole. L'aidant peut être un membre de la famille, un voisin ou un ami qui consacre son temps, fournit son aide et fait preuve de compassion, sur une base régulière, en aidant une autre personne qui n'est pas en mesure de prendre soin d'elle. L'aidant ne peut pas être un professionnel de la santé ni recevoir de compensation formelle pour les efforts qu'il déploie en tant que soignant. Les docteurs, infirmières, le personnel hospitalier et tous les autres professionnels de la santé ne sont pas autorisés à poser leur candidature ; cependant, ils peuvent nommer des aidants non professionnels. Les nominés doivent être âgés de 18 ans ou plus au moment de la nomination. En 2013, les prix « BRAVE » de Shire sont ouverts aux nominés admissibles dans 19 pays : Australie, Belgique, Brésil, Canada, Danemark, Finlande, France, Allemagne, Irlande, Italie, Luxembourg, Pays-Bas, Norvège, Portugal, Espagne, Suède, Suisse, Royaume-Uni et États-Unis.
