Some of the practical and useful research on refractive surgery presented by several of these surgeons is summarized below.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 29, 2009 -- Trusted LASIK Surgeons is pleased to feature contributions from members of its Trusted LASIK Surgeons Directory at the recent at the recent annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meeting (ASCRS) annual meeting in San Francisco, California. These eye surgeons are among the leading LASIK and refractive eye surgery experts in the advancement of vision correction care. This annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology is among the largest gathering of ophthalmologists in the world. Over 6,000 ophthalmologists, technicians and industry representatives typically attend the ASCRS annual meeting.

Chicago Lasik and Refractive Surgery Expert Dr. Randy Epstein of Chicago Cornea Consultants, Ltd., gave a presentation on refractive intraocular lens implants, including presbyopia-correcting and toric implants for astigmatism, which are typically used during cataract surgery, at the Alcon Surgical booth. These lens implants enable patients to see in the distance and read without being dependent on glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.

David Huang, a Los Angeles LASIK surgery expert and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Institute of the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, presented his research on the Detection of Keratoconus Pattern on Corneal Pachymetry Maps by Fitting of Gaussian Waveform in order to detect keratoconus on corneal pachymetry maps. Dr. Huang's innovative new pachymetric analysis may prove to be useful in the early diagnosis and tracking of corneal ectatic diseases like keratoconus.

Palo Alto and San Jose LASIK surgery expert Dr. Edward Manche, Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Stanford Eye Laser Center and Professor of Ophthalmology in the Stanford University School of Medicine made four presentations. One study compared PRK with LASIK wavefront study and showed that both wavefront LASIK and wavefront PRK yield identical results after 3 months. His second study demonstrated that femtosecond laser produces more accurate flaps than a mechanical keratome by comparing intraoperative subtraction pachymetry to postoperative anterior segment ocular coherence tomography (OCT) in eyes undergoing LASIK with either a mechanical keratome or a femtosecond laser. Dr. Manche's third study looked at pre-op pupil size effect on post-op visual performance such as glare, halos and quality of vision in myopic wavefront guided LASIK. The study found that pupil size has no effect on post op symptoms. His final study looked at a comparison of dry eye findings comparing LASIK to PRK and concluded that there was no difference in dryness between LASIK and PRK with a return to pre-operations levels by month 6.

Dr. Jon Dishler, a Denver laser eye surgery expert, presented his research on the "Results of LASIK Using the VisuMax and Mel-80 Lasers Compared with the IntraLase and Allegretto Laser in Myopic and Astigmatic Vision Correction". Dr. Dishler is one of the few surgeons in the United States to have two different femtosecond lasers as well as two different excimer lasers. His presentation showed that the two systems both produce excellent results.

Founder of Davidorf Eye Group and Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmogy at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, Dr. Jonathan Davidorf, a LASIK eye surgery expert in Los Angeles, California, made several presentations and taught courses concerning vision correction procedures involving lens implants and served as a senior course instructor for "New and Emerging Technologies in Cataract and Refractive Surgery." In his research entitled, "AcrySof Toric IOL Implantation to Correct Post-Penetrating Keratoplasty Astigmatism," Dr. Davidorf found that virtually all corneal transplant patients have significant astigmatism and by implanting a toric intraocular lens to correct the astigmatism the patients have a chance for better uncorrected vision. His second study "Predictability of IOL Calculations in Clinical Practice for Presbyopic IOLs: ReSTOR Aspheric and Crystalens HD IOLs", compared the accuracy of current formulas in detemining the most accurate power for the two most popular presbyopia correcting lenses, ReStor and Crystalens. In another study, Dr. Davidorf reported on the "Synchrony Dual-Optic Accommodating Intraocular Lens," which detailed surgical techniques and results of this promising new presbyopia correcting lens that is still under FDA study. Dr. Davidorf is a FDA clinical investigator for this lens.

Dallas-Fort Worth LASIK eye surgery and vision correction experts James P. McCulley, MD and R. Wayne Bowman, MD, both Professors of Ophthalmology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, authored or co-authored over 14 presentations at the ASCRS meeting. In "Wavefront-Guided Ablation Retreatment in Myopic Eyes" (E.M. Mohamed; O. Muftuoglu; R. Bowman; D. Cavanagh; V. Mootha; J.P. McCulley), the researchers concluded that that using Wavefront-guided LASIK to retreat patients who have already undergone keratorefractive surgery is effective, predictable, and safe. In their study of "Repeatability of Anterior and Posterior Corneal Higher-Order Aberrations in 4 mm, 6 mm, and 8 mm Diameters Measured by Pentacam System" (J. Wojtowicz; O. Muftuoglu; E.M. Mohamed; V. Mootha; R. Bowman; D. Cavanagh; J.P. McCulley), they found that determination of abnormalities of how our eye focuses an image is more complex than just near sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The focusing of an image includes patterns called "high order aberrations" of which the above are just a part of the sum of aberrations (HOA's). Custom or high definition treatments rely on the measurement of these to plan surgical approaches for the correction of vision. This study demonstrates the importance of doing these measurements in a careful, unhurried manner, and how multiple consistent measurements are needed to be certain the treatment correctly represents the actual fingerprint of the eye.

Other papers presented by Doctors McCulley and Bowman included "Outcomes of Limbal Relaxing Incisions with Apodized Diffractive Multifocal IOL Implantation"; "Laser-in-Situ Keratomileusis for Residual Refractive Errors After Apodized Diffractive Multifocal IOL Implantation" and a comparison of two different excimer laser systems, Visx and WaveLight Allegretto for the correction of farsightedness. They concluded that more recent VISX models have resulted in significantly improved visual outcomes over previous machines. Researchers also showed that the WaveLight Allegretto with 400 Hz enables patients to recover the fastest.

Houston laser eye surgery pioneer, Dr. Stephen Slade, of Slade Baker Vision, presented his dry eye research, a major nationwide study on different tear therapies as well as a study on PRK v. LASIK and the ICL. Dr. Slade also moderator the IntraLase, Femto and Crystalens user groups.

The refractive eye surgeons listed and profiled in the Trusted LASIK Surgeons Directory are among the most highly qualified LASIK and refractive surgeons and includes many of the true pioneers in vision correction surgery, not just with LASIK but other procedures such as lens implants, phakic implants, and conductive keratoplasty.
