Et ce n'est pas uniquement un indicateur de la mortalité, mais aussi des maladies. Par exemple, le risque de développer un diabète dans les cinq prochaines années est deux fois plus accru si vous avez des télomères courts. »

Toutefois, le Dr Blackburn avertit qu'il ne faut pas s'attendre bientôt à une panacée de l'éternelle jeunesse.

« Tout colporteur du monde a déjà essayé de proposer divers remèdes pour prolonger la jeunesse. La première réaction est la peur. Mais si vous voulez vivre plus longtemps et vieillir en bonne santé, alors vous devez suivre les conseils de votre mère, à savoir bien dormir, bien manger, essayer de garder une bonne attitude et le soutien social et faire du sport. »

Outre le Dr Blackburn, dont le travail nobélisé analysait la biologie du vieillissement, participeront au débat la baronne Joan Bakewell, animatrice et journaliste ; la baronne Sally Greengross, militante et politicienne ; le professeur John Appleby, Économiste en chef au King's Fund ; le professeur Tom Kirkwood, Doyen des recherches sur le vieillissement à l'université de Newcastle et le professeur Tim Eisen, professeur d'oncologie clinique à l'université de Cambridge.
