(Vocus) November 3, 2009 -- Lancaster Laboratories was the first organization to become accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) and was assigned certificate number 1.01 thirty years ago.

Achieving this milestone is a testament to the importance the laboratory owners and staff place on quality, competence and producing reliable data for their clients. “Sustaining this level of quality and service for such a long time is no easy feat. Everyone at Lancaster Laboratories should be very proud.” said Pete Unger, President of A2LA.

Lancaster, with annual sales of more than $95 million, is one of the largest commercial testing laboratories in the world, specializing in the environmental, food, pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sciences. Founded in 1961, it has more than 900 employees worldwide and laboratories in Pennsylvania and Ireland.

“We're one of the largest contract laboratories in the country,” said J. Wilson Hershey, Ph.D., Lancaster’s President. “We provide comprehensive analytical and regulatory compliance services in client facilities and our own labs.”

A2LA is a nonprofit, non-governmental, public service, membership society, whose stated mission is “to provide comprehensive accreditation services for laboratories, inspection bodies, proficiency testing providers, and reference material producers.”
