The Developments in Materials for Medical Applications virtual event will kick-off with a keynote address by Dr. Xiang Zhang, Principal Consultant and Head of the Division of Medical Materials and Devices at CERAM. The address is entitled, "Materials for Medical Applications: From Being Part of the Problem to Being Part of the Solution." Zhang will discuss materials issues associated with a range of medical devices and outline how materials will play an ever-increasing role in the development of next-generation medical devices and combination products.

Zhang draws on a wide variety of experience in both academia and industry and is currently working on a number of pioneering projects in the area of Controlled Release Technology (CRT). In addition to water-glass, Zhang's team is investigating bioceramics and is developing ceramic-polymer hybrid materials for orthopaedic applications. Furthermore, Zhang's team is developing bioactive polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and toughened ceramics using his knowledge and experience of micro-fracture mechanics, an area in which he has been active for 17 years. Prior to joining CERAM, Xiang worked as Director of Cambridge NanoTech, in the field of nanoconductive materials and diagnostic medical devices. Learn more about the keynote address and Zhang here.

Multiple speaker and chat sessions will follow the keynote address. In the first session, The Building Blocks of Medical Innovation, Dr. Wolfram Altenhofen, Vice President of Business Development at Leukocare AG, will examine functionalising medical devices with biological components in his presentation, "Novel Approaches to Shelf-Life Extension and Terminal Sterilisation of Biologic-Device Combination Products." This will be followed by, "Resorbable Polymers: The Materials Behind Disappearing Implants With a Lasting Impact on Medicine," by Robert van Tuil, Marketing Director at Purac Biomaterials.

In the Trends in Packaging Materials session, panelists will discuss recent and forthcoming innovations in medical-grade packaging materials. Panelists include: Don Handrow, Director of Product Development at Prent Corporation, John Merritt, President and Founder of Merritt, Myers, Incorporated, and Michael Scholla, Senior Consultant at DuPont Medical Packaging.

Other speaker and chat sessions include: Materials Selection for Catheters, Emerging Technologies in Orthopaedic Materials, Materials for Implantable Devices, The Pros and Cons of PVC, and Medical Device Coatings.

All speaker sessions culminate with a live Q&A. The session agenda is also available online.
