KGI Professor Cregg to Be Featured Speaker at Pichia 2012 Conference
Date:10/25/2011

CLAREMONT, Calif., Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) Research Professor James M. Cregg, PhD, will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Pichia 2012 conference from February 23 – March 3 in Alpbach, Austria.

Cregg has spent years conducting internationally-renowned research on the development and use of the yeast species, Pichia pastoris, as a system for the production of recombinant proteins.

At the Pichia 2012 Conference he will discuss how the Pichia system began, how it works, and resources available to scientists and drug developers. The event is expected to attract a large audience of global participants from universities, research institutes and companies who wish to exchange ideas on Pichia.

Cregg's work has had a significant impact on the development of pharmaceutical proteins such as chimeric monoclonal antibodies, which work against rheumatoid arthritis, certain cancers and other diseases, as well as human serum albumen, a component of artificial blood plasma.

Many laboratories around the world now use Pichia to make proteins for medical and research applications. Expectations are that within the next decade this yeast expression system will lead to the development of more drugs to combat diseases, according to Cregg.

Cregg has provided keynote addresses at numerous meetings. He serves as a reviewer or editor on five peer-reviewed journals in the biotechnology field: Protein Expression and Purification (executive editor); Applied and Environmental Microbiology; Biotechnology Letters; FEMS Yeast Research; and Molecular Biotechnology.
