Melanoma is the fastest rising cancer in the U.S. and is the least funded. It is the most common cancer amongst 20-30 year olds, and 53,000 new cases are reported annually. In 1960 the risk of getting Melanoma was 1 in 600, but today it is 1 in 74. STUNNING! There are now more new cases of Melanoma, than HIV/AIDS, and it occurs in all age groups. It is the number one cause of cancer in women 25-30 and the #2 cause behind breast cancer in women 30-35. While there have been no significant advances in medical therapies (or survival) for patients with advanced Melanoma in the past 30 years, it remains #8 on the NCI Research Funding list for Cancer.
