BACKGROUND ON THE LEGISLATION
The bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2007 (S.459/H.R 758) allows a woman and her doctor to decide whether she should recuperate for at least 48 hours in the hospital or whether she has enough support to get quality care at home. It does not mandate a hospital stay, if both the woman and her doctor feel it unnecessary. The bill is sponsored by Representative DeLauro (D-CT) in the House and Senator Snowe (R-ME) in the Senate. To date, the legislation has 204 co-sponsors in the House and 18 in the Senate. Lifetime's online petition at myLifetime.com to end "drive-through" mastectomies has been signed more than 20 million times at myLifetime.com.
