Elekta Announces Elekta Infinity - a New System for Faster and More Precise Treatment of Cancer Tumors
Date:10/29/2007

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Elekta, a global leader in radiation oncology and non-invasive neurosurgery solutions, announced Elekta Infinity*, the definitive new digital linear accelerator optimized for delivering Volumetric Intensity Modulated Arc Therapy* (VMAT), a very fast Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) treatment delivered in single or multiple arcs, at the 49th Annual Meeting of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO). The meeting is being held October 28-November 1, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

In the Elekta booth, Jay Hoey, Executive Vice President Product Creation at Elekta and CEO of IMPAC Medical Systems, announced the new Elekta Infinity, which more precisely targets tumors and protects surrounding healthy tissue, while drastically reducing radiation therapy treatment times.

"Elekta is committed to fighting serious disease and improving quality of life," says Hoey. "The Elekta Infinity with VMAT demonstrates this by benefiting patients with dramatically shorter treatment times and highly precise tumor targeting."

Elekta VMAT improves on IMRT technology

Utilizing Elekta's VMAT solution greatly improves on existing IMRT technologies and offers a faster alternative to helical tomotherapy. Elekta's VMAT solution, when used with Elekta Infinity, varies the radiation beam during treatment by simultaneously manipulating the gantry position and speed, MLC leaves, dose rate and collimator angle.

This provides several distinct advantages over current IMRT techniques, specifically the ability to deliver more radiation to the target while sparing healthy tissue in significantly less time than existing therapies. In addition, Elekta Infinity combines VMAT with VolumeView(TM) 3D cone beam imaging to create high-co
