El Proyecto Recuperación transforma hemoderivados en medicina para la hemofilia en países en desarrollo

El Proyecto Recuperación transformará el crioprecipitado de donantes de sangre canadienses que antes se desechaba en el concentrado de factor VIII de BIOTEST, denominado Haemoctin®, para tratar a hemofílicos. Se canalizará mediante el Programa de Ayuda Humanitaria de la WFH, dedicado a apoyar a pacientes de países en desarrollo con escaso o nulo acceso a estos medicamentos capaces de salvar vidas y miembros, personas que de no recibir atención estarían en peligro de muerte o de sufrir una discapacidad grave.

"El Proyecto Recuperación tiene el potencial de mejorar las vidas de miles de hemofílicos en todo el mundo", afirmó Alain Weill, presidente de la WFH. "Además, permite que la WFH planifique con todo cuidado el lugar y el momento de distribución de estas medicinas esenciales, maximizando así los beneficios de este extraordinario esfuerzo humanitario".

Se calcula que en cada año de vida del proyecto se donarán al menos cinco millones de unidades internacionales de factor VIII. Esto permitirá el tratamiento anual de aproximadamente 5.000 hemorragias articulares, el síntoma más común de hemofilia, en niños y adultos. Sin estos tratamientos, las personas que sufran tales hemorragias tendrían que soportar semanas de extremo dolor y, con el tiempo, grave daño articular que puede derivar en mutilaciones. Además, el tratamiento temprano o la prevención de las hemorragias facilitará que los cuidadores (padres y madres, cónyuges, hermanos) no se vean en la obligación de faltar al trabajo o la escuela para atender al paciente inmovilizado en casa o en el hospital.
