Date:5/3/2011

STOW, Mass., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Healthcare executives hold high expectations that information technology will reduce the cost of healthcare.  Many obstacles exist to digitization, however.  Earley & Associates, the nation's foremost information management and taxonomy consulting firm, is hosting a two-part webinar series titled Digitization of the Healthcare Industry Part 1 - Core Drivers and Obstacles to Adoption on Wednesday, May 4 from 1-2 p.m. EDT and Digitization of the Healthcare Industry Part 2 - Data Integration Challenges and Approaches on Wednesday, May 18 from 1-2 p.m. EDT.  The sessions will be led by Dr. Christian Reich, Program Manager at the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership, an FDA-led NIH/PhRMA partnership.

"With the current models and drivers, we are on a path to health care costs increasing up to 35% of gross domestic product by 2050," says Reich, who will lead the webinar along with Seth Maislin.  "This means that one third of the entire economy will be healthcare-related, which is clearly unsustainable.  Information technology can solve many of the problems around the cost of healthcare, however numerous obstacles exist."

Reich will discuss the role that taxonomies and information science approaches will play in addressing: clinical trial automation, post marketing drug surveillance, benefit-risk analysis and comparative effectiveness of treatments.

Dr. Reich, Senior Consultant at Earley & Associates, is Program Manager at the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership, a public-private research project between PhRMA and academic research institutions managed by the Foundation for the NIH and chaired by the FDA.  Reich is responsible for the technical infrastructure, medical terminology and successful execution of the research studies. He was a practicing physician before joining the Human Genome Project, and then held positions at Millenium Pharmaceuticals and Genstruct.  Maislin is an indexing and information architecture consultant for Earley & Associates who specializes in the construction of navigable information hierarchies, knowledge retrieval systems, and indexes.

Part 1 - held on May 4, 2011 - provides an overview of how the management of data in the healthcare industry has evolved over the past few years; then addresses programs to begin to address the many challenges involved.

Participants learn how consistent terminology and data improve quality, support evidence-based medicine, improve clinical trials data and realize the future promise of personalized medicine.  To register for Webinar Part 1, click here.

In Part 2 - held on May 18, 2011 - Dr. Reich reviews clinical and administrative data standards that are impacted by electronic health records and digitization.  The session will summarize how diagnostic codes of ICD-9, MedDRA and SNOWMED compare in terms of coverage, semantic precision, concept independence and semantic breadth and how organizations need to adapt and map classification structures in order to address their challenges.
