Medical Group's Micro Battery Wins for Industry Leadership

JOPLIN, Mo., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- EaglePicher Technologies, LLC, an EaglePicher company, today announced its Medical Power group has received Battery Power Products and Technology's first annual Innova Award. The company received honors in the Industry Leadership category for its Micro Battery -- the world's smallest implantable medical-grade battery.

The Innova Award recognizes companies that are striving for excellence and achieving technology breakthroughs. EaglePicher's Micro Battery was recognized as an Industry Leader because of its promise of impacting the medical device industry by allowing implantable medical devices to be created even smaller than current commercial offerings.

The Micro Battery, at 0.260" long x 0.090" diameter, is at least 50% smaller and lighter than other commercially available products and can be deployed via a minimally-invasive catheter procedure rather than traditional implantation surgery. Electrical capacity exceeds the original design objective by a factor of five with the result that it can theoretically power the device for more than 15 years.

The Micro Battery will create new opportunities for device manufacturers in Neurological Stimulation, Brain Computer Interfaces, Cardiovascular Monitoring, and Neural Prostheses (Retinal implants, Cochlear implants) by allowing them to create smaller, more efficient devices.

"EaglePicher is honored to receive this recognition from Battery Power Products and Technology," said Marcela Gavril, director of product development, EaglePicher Technologies/Medical Power. "We are extremely proud of the Micro Battery, what it will do for the industry and most importantly, what it means to those who will benefit from the devices it powers."
