DuPont Science Leader Urges U.S. House Committee to Continue Federal Investment in Transformative, Clean Energy Technologies
Date:1/27/2010

from ARPA-E for a third generation biofuels research program to determine if sugars from macroalgae -- or seaweed -- can be efficiently converted to biobutanol. The project will complement the efforts under way in the Butamax™ joint venture to commercialize a multi-generational pipeline of isobutanol technologies from grain and cellulosic biomass that is the result of extensive research and technology investment by DuPont and BP.

“Support from the DOE and ARPA-E has allowed us to tackle this very challenging technology program of seaweed to butanol conversion,” Pierce said. “Our R&D portfolio is driven by market needs and expected returns for our shareholders. This serves near- and mid-term market needs well. Public-private partnerships best serve the pursuit of riskier, transformational technologies.”
