Dr. David R. Bassett Joins ActiGraph Scientific Advisory Board
Date:8/1/2013

Pensacola, FL (PRWEB) August 01, 2013

ActiGraph, a leading provider of objective physical activity and sleep/wake monitoring solutions for the global research community, announced today that Dr. David R. Bassett has joined its Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Bassett is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, & Sport Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

“We are honored that Dr. Bassett has joined the ActiGraph Scientific Advisory Board. As an internationally renowned expert in the field of objective physical activity measurement techniques, Dr. Bassett brings an extraordinary amount of practical experience and valuable insight to the group,” said Jeff Arnett, CEO of ActiGraph.

A professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, & Sport Studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Dr. Bassett teaches courses in Exercise Physiology, Fitness Testing & Exercise Prescription, Clinical Exercise Physiology, and Human Obesity. His primary research interest is in the measurement of physical activity and energy expenditure in humans, using objective methods. He and his colleagues have studied the validity and reliability of accelerometers, pedometers, and heart rate monitors, and they have developed new methods of assessing physical activity. In many of these studies, respiratory gas exchange is used to measure energy expenditure; this provides a convenient “gold standard” for comparison purposes. Dr. Bassett has explored relationships between physical activity and body weight, blood pressure, and other cardiovascular risk factors. He collaborates with researchers in the fields of public health and transportation planning to study the relationships between active transportation and health. Dr. Bassett is a fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine, a member of the National Academy of Kinesiology, and he serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Applied Physiology, Journal of Physical Activity and Public Health, and Research Digest.

Established in January of 2011, the ActiGraph Scientific Advisory Board’s primary objective is to provide the company with guidance and expertise as it continues to enhance its current hardware and software offerings and explores emerging applications for objective activity monitoring products. In addition to Dr. Bassett, the ActiGraph Scientific Advisory Board consists of Dr. Patty Freedson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; Dr. Victor KR Matsudo, Scientific Director of the Physical Fitness Research Center of São Caetano do Sul (CELAFISCS); Dr. Jorge Mota, Director of the Research Centre in Physical Activity, Health and Leisure at the University of Porto; Dr. Bonnie Spring, Professor in Preventive Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; and Dr. Stewart Trost, Professor in the School of Human Movement Studies Department at The University of Queensland.
