SANTA MONICA, Calif., April 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Cord Blood America, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: CBAI), the umbilical cord blood stem cell preservation company (http://www.cordblood-america.com) focused on bringing the life saving potential of stem cells to families nationwide and internationally, today said it strongly supports legislation introduced in Congress by Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA.) that would require the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop and disseminate educational materials on the value of storing umbilical cord blood stem cells at birth.
The legislation requires a standard process for health care professionals to confirm that expectant parents have been informed about cord blood banking options.
"The more parents know about how umbilical cord blood stem cells have been used to successfully treat life-threatening cancers including leukemia and lymphoma, and the more education there is about how these stem cells are being studied to treat diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, brain injuries and other major conditions, the more likely is it that parents will make an informed decision on the storage of stem cells at birth," said Matthew Schissler, Cord Blood America founder and CEO. "We strongly support the Cord Blood Education and Awareness Act of 2009."
