Cold Chain Technologies Promotes Richard Formato to Principal Technologist

Cold Chain Technologies (CCT), a global leading manufacturer and distributor of temperature-controlled packaging solutions is pleased to announce the promotion of Richard M. Formato to the newly created position of CCT Principal Technologist.

Since joining CCT, Richard has contributed a steady stream of technical accomplishments for which many company products are currently based. Highlighted contributions include the use of simulation in the thermal packaging design process, commercial development of CCT’s extensive line of Phase Change Materials (PCMs), and most recently the patent pending development of Gelled PCM (an industry first).

This promotion recognizes Richard’s most recent contribution of Gelled PCM, and CCT’s commitment to technology development enabling best in class cold chain solutions. “The Cold Chain industry has long recognized the challenge of packaging non water based PCM with zero defects,” states Geoffrey Kaiser, CCT’s Director of Engineering & Technical Services. “Richard foresaw the need for a better solution and figured out how to “solidify” these phase change materials, while still maintaining their key thermal properties. This achievement is unique in the PCM industry and is recognized by two pending patents.”

Richard joined CCT as a Principal Thermal Engineer in 2008, with the objective of developing a method to reliably and quickly simulate the behavior of thermal packaging systems as they move through the Cold Chain. This shipper simulation and analysis service, first introduced by CCT, is now offered as “Kool Designs,” recognized as the industry’s leading shipper simulation service.

Richard also led the effort to optimize the performance of the currently offered PCMs for use in CCT’s product line and market applications. The use of PCMs in the design of thermal shipping systems has allowed CCT’s customers access to smaller, lighter shipping systems with a sizeable reduction in total cost of ownership. In recognition of these accomplishments, Rich was promoted to R&D Manager in 2013.

Prior to joining CCT, Richard held lead technical and management positions, developing state of the art materials, including solid polymer electrolyte membranes and functional coatings, development & manufacture of PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cells for portable power and polarized progressive ophthalmic lenses for consumer applications. Over the course of his 26 year career, Richard has demonstrated the ability to take complex technical products from concept through manufacturing, and his work has resulted in multiple US patents (18 issued, 2 pending) and a number of peer-reviewed and corporate technical publications. Richard holds a B.S. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Master of Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, both in Mechanical Engineering.
