Center for Molecular Medicine Among First to Offer New FDA-Approved Test to Aid in Treatment of Prostate Cancer
Date:2/28/2008

can Cancer Society (ACS), prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. The ACS estimates that there will be about 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer in the U.S. this year, and about 28,660 men will die as a result. MPC occurs when tumor cells spread to other locations in the body and grow. Although there are several options for the treatment of MPC, oncologists often have to wait months before they can determine if a specific treatment has been beneficial to the patient.

The CellSearch System, which is distributed by Veridex, a Johnson & Johnson company, was cleared by the FDA in January 2004 as an in vitro diagnostic test to aid in the identifying and counting of CTCs in a blood sample. Pricing for the test is $495, and is covered by most insurance providers.
