ANN ARBOR, Mich., and COLUMBIA, S.C., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- CareEvolution, Inc. and the South Carolina Office of Research & Statistics are pleased to announce that the South Carolina Health Information Exchange (SCHIEx) has been named a finalist in the Interoperability category by Microsoft and the Microsoft Healthcare Users Group (MS-HUG) 2008 Innovation Awards Program. The MS-HUG Healthcare Innovation Awards are presented annually to those healthcare organizations and their technology solutions partners who have best demonstrated industry leadership in using technology to achieve innovation excellence in containing costs and improving the quality of patient care.
"SCHIEx is a great example of how Microsoft technologies can help healthcare organizations deliver critical clinical information where and when it is needed -- in this case across a state covering the large population," said Chris Sullivan, U.S. health industry solutions director, Microsoft Corp. "We remain committed to working with innovators such as CareEvolution and the South Carolina Office of Research and Statistics to improve health around the world by utilizing Microsoft's familiar, easy-to-use and widely supported technology platform."
SCHIEx is an innovative statewide initiative that provides a state level info-highway that connects local health care providers and stakeholder groups to each other across the state. Seeded with claims data, SCHIEx is built on a federated architecture that delivers a 10-year health history of more than 6 million citizens of the state inferred from Medicaid and UB92/HCFA1500 claims. This broad dataset covering the entire state is supplemented by deep clinical data adapters that can connect national lab vendors, prescription history sources, the state immunization registry, and local and regional EMR enabled health care providers. In addition to serving as a Longitudinal Health Record portal, the project serves as a statewide record locator service (RLS) that is being used by emerging regional health information exchanges across the state.
"SCHIEx serves as statewide utility for healthcare stakeholders across South Carolina interested in getting a head start in leveraging information technology in their efforts to enhance the quality and continuity of patient care, improve clinical workflow and productivity, and deliver consumer centric care," said David Patterson, PhD, Assistant Chief, Health & Demographics, South Carolina Office of Research & Statistics. Vik Kheterpal, MD, a Principal at CareEvolution added that, "SCHIEx was born of the need to connect South Carolina. Working with the ORS we have succeeded in paving a technology e-health highway that insures that patient information can travel across South Carolina as fast as patients are moving from one care provider to another."
