Cardiometabolic Health Congress Faculty Deliver Expert Guidance on Novel Management Strategies for Diabetes and its Comorbidities
Date:10/1/2013

BOSTON, Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Critical to improving outcomes in diabetes is providing patient-centered care and encouraging shared decision-making. During a featured opening session on Friday, John Buse, MD, shares strategies for improving adherence, tailoring treatment regimens and provides an expert perspective on recent safety concerns with diabetes therapies.

Presenting state-of-the-science in insulin therapy as monotherapy or in combination with GLP-1 agonists, as well as the latest advances in managing Type 1 diabetes to prevent the microvascular and macrovascular complications of this disease, Dr. Buse will be joined by a stellar faculty to include Drs. Irl Hirsch, Robert Eckel and Jay Skyler.

With a national spotlight on high rates of childhood obesity and diabetes, Drs. Sonia Caprio and David Ludwig, renowned pediatric specialists, address the role of adolescent obesity in the pathogenesis of diabetes, the clinical and metabolic phenotypes of children with T2DM, and the clinical implications of the TODAY trial through a panel discussion. Dr. Ludwig outlines an innovative "integrative, family-based approach" for clinicians seeking to educate parents of obese children.

Friday's keynote session features another panel discussion titled "Clinical Controversies in Hypertension Management: Expert Perspectives & Discussion." In this lively exchange, Drs. Rajiv Agarwal, Raymond Townsend, and William White discuss common dilemmas facing clinicians who treat patients with comorbid hypertension and diabetes. A presentation by Robert Brook, MD, provides guidance to clinicians seeking to understand the role of alternative medicine in hypertension management.

In addition to the comprehensive array of educational sessions addressing the latest evidence and research on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and hypertension, attendees at the conference are able to choose from 14 symposia featuring presenters who are lead investigators of all recent cardiometabolic trials.

Darren McGuire, MD, said, "CMHC provides a great opportunity to catch up on the latest developments and thinking in the overlap area of insulin resistance and cardiovascular health, and is one of the only conferences in the world that brings together experts across the breadth of diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease to share ideas and foster collaborations."
