Canary Foundation's Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir Elected to the National Academies Institute of Medicine

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Canary Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds research in early cancer detection, announced that its Scientific Program Director, Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, has been elected as a new member of the U.S. National Academies Institute of Medicine (IOM). This is one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. The IOM, established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, serves as adviser to the nation to improve health. Dr. Gambhir was one of the 65 new members and five foreign associates acknowledged by IOM for their professional achievements and dedication in the areas of health care, prevention of disease, education, or research. He is also one of the youngest members ever elected to the IOM.

"Medicine has such a profound impact in our lives and I look forward to applying my training, knowledge and passion in cancer research at the Institute of Medicine, which has been at the forefront of our nation's health and science policy issues."

Dr. Gambhir serves as Canary Scientific Program Director where he leads the Canary science team of leaders in the fields of proteomics, imaging, genomics, epigenomics, oncology and subject matter specialists in ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and lung cancer from the best universities, hospitals and research institutions in the world.

He is a professor of radiology and bioengineering at Stanford University, where he serves as chief of the nuclear medicine division and director of the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS). He is a principal investigator for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence U54 and the In Vivo Cellular & Molecular Imaging Center P50 grants, and is the program director for a NCI T32 post-doctoral fellowship molecular imaging training grant.
