Date:10/21/2008

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Canary Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds research in early cancer detection, announced that its Scientific Program Director, Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, has been elected as a new member of the U.S. National Academies Institute of Medicine (IOM). This is one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. The IOM, established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences, serves as adviser to the nation to improve health. Dr. Gambhir was one of the 65 new members and five foreign associates acknowledged by IOM for their professional achievements and dedication in the areas of health care, prevention of disease, education, or research. He is also one of the youngest members ever elected to the IOM.

"I am deeply honored and humbled by this election to membership," said Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir. "Medicine has such a profound impact in our lives and I look forward to applying my training, knowledge and passion in cancer research at the Institute of Medicine, which has been at the forefront of our nation's health and science policy issues."

Dr. Gambhir serves as Canary Scientific Program Director where he leads the Canary science team of leaders in the fields of proteomics, imaging, genomics, epigenomics, oncology and subject matter specialists in ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and lung cancer from the best universities, hospitals and research institutions in the world.

He is a professor of radiology and bioengineering at Stanford University, where he serves as chief of the nuclear medicine division and director of the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS). He is a principal investigator for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence U54 and the In Vivo Cellular & Molecular Imaging Center P50 grants, and is the program director for a NCI T32 post-doctoral fellowship molecular imaging training grant.

Dr. Gambhir serves on numerous corporate scientific advisory boards and the NCI scientific advisory board. His many honors include the Paul C. Aebersold Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine, Hounsfield Medal from Imperial College London, the Distinguished Clinical Scientist Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Holst Medal, the Taplin Award and the Tesla Medal. In 2007, Dr. Gambhir also co-hosted a Nobel Symposium in Stockholm on Molecular Imaging.

"At Canary Foundation where saving lives -- through detecting cancer at the earliest stage -- is our mission, we've been honored to have Sam Gambhir head our scientific teams and we are confident that he will have much to contribute as an active member at the Institute of Medicine," said Don Listwin, founder and chairman of Canary Foundation.
