Brainlab Launches Newest Innovation in Image Guided Surgery Technology
Date:10/3/2011

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Brainlab announced today the launch of Curve™ Image Guided Surgery. Curve, the ultimate command and control center for information-guided surgery, is unveiling at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Annual Meeting.

"Curve represents thousands of enhancements based on years of feedback from our customers. Incorporating user feedback has always been a priority for Brainlab and has helped to produce the ultimate surgical navigation experience," said Stefan Vilsmeier, CEO and President of Brainlab. "We are helping foster collaboration and potentially improve patient outcomes."

Curve features the latest image guidance software powering advanced 3D displays and hallmark Brainlab image enrichment. This advanced technology allows ultra-fast image updating when tracking instruments, which promotes intra-operative confidence.

Using a human-centered design approach, Brainlab sets out to challenge conventional surgical utility and incorporate great ergonomics, two game-changing, multi-directional touch terminals, digital HD, hi-fi and wi-fi*.

Additional new features include:

  • Dual-option, beyond HD provides more space to display and efficiently organize information.
  • Cameras with motorized adjustment, telescopic stand and laser pointer for unbelievable setup flexibility.
  • Extended camera tracking volume multiplies setup options without compromising patient registration.
  • Digital, hi-fidelity music dock for an unexpected listening experience.
  • Human-factor design hub connects Curve to the outside world and rapidly integrates third party surgical devices.
  • Eight multi-directional power wheels that push cables away help rapidly maneuver Curve in and out of the OR.
  • Centralized ‘Home’ and ‘Start’ screens with drag-and-drop functionality makes launching software applications and displaying contents streamlined and easy.

Curve also brings surgeons closer to colleagues, both near and far. Mobile wireless* networking lets users stream and record then push to linked workstations. Colleagues can watch, in digital HD, the live navigation stream and streaming video from integrated sources like scopes and intra-operative imaging platforms through the hospital's 'Brainlab OR web portal.'

Multiple data ports in the easy to access hub allow surgeons to seamlessly connect to intra-operative imaging and surgical scopes, session-share by connecting with a Digital LightBox, stream to a remote workstation, transfer patient data via PACS, and upload and share in the cloud with Quentry.

About Brainlab

Brainlab develops, manufactures and markets software-driven medical technology that supports targeted, less-invasive treatment.

Among the core products are image-guided systems that provide highly accurate real-time information used for navigation during surgical procedures. This utility has been further expanded to serve as a computer terminal for physicians to more effectively access and interpret diagnostic scans and other digital medical information for better-informed decisions.

Brainlab solutions allow expansion from a single system to operating suites to digitally integrated facilities covering all subspecialties from neurosurgery and spinal surgery to orthopedics, ENT, CMF and trauma and oncology. With 5,000 systems installed in over 80 countries, Brainlab is a market leader in image-guided technology.

The privately held Brainlab group, founded in 1989, is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and today employs 950 people in 17 offices across Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America.
