Boehringer Laboratories, Inc. Announces Live Surgery Using Innovative System to Calibrate Sleeve Gastrectomy

Boehringer Laboratories Inc., with a forty year history of medical device innovations, is proud to announce the successful broadcast of a live surgery by St. Luke’s University Health Network bariatric surgeons Leonardo Claros, MD, FACS, FAMBS, and Maher El Chaar, MD, FACS, FAMBS, using the ViSiGi 3D™ Sleeve Gastrectomy Calibration System.

This sleeve gastrectomy surgery was performed and broadcast live for a postgraduate course of more than four hundred surgeons from around the world during the 5th International Consensus Summit for Sleeve Gastrectomy (ICSSG) and 19th World Congress of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and metabolic disorders (IFSO2014).

ViSiGi 3D™ is the first system specifically designed to aid in the crucial visualization and calibration of the stapling required to effectively perform these procedures. Its innovative design mitigates some of the more common risks, saves OR time and replaces multiple devices, according to Dr. Claros. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is the most prevalent and fastest growing surgical intervention for the treatment of obesity in the United States, he said.

“We have been using the ViSiGi 3d™system regularly in our surgeries, as the system helps to better delineate the gastric area to be transected,” said Dr. Claros. “This translates into a safer procedure because we are always aware of the location of the calibration tube.”

St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, PA was only one of a handful of sites worldwide chosen to be part of this important scientific training symposium.
