"Our goal for the Summit was to identify ways to prevent medication errors at the point of care for this particular technology," says Michael Cohen, RPh, MS, ScD, FASHP, President of ISMP. "This effort has brought together technology vendors such as B. Braun, clinicians and safety experts to develop recommendations for reducing risk and ensuring successful implementation of smart pumps."
In forums at the Summit, O'Connell described issues clinicians can face implementing "smart pump" infusion therapy and solutions.
"Smart pumps need to be designed in a way that makes them simple for clinicians to use," says O'Connell. "By making the pumps easy to use, manufacturers can help ensure that clinicians will use the safety features properly. Our goal at B. Braun is to make our pumps as safe and easy to use as possible to increase clinician compliance and reduce the chance of medication errors."
O'Connell also participated on ISMP's Smart Pump Forum Steering Committee, which has focused on identifying issues related to optimizing the use of smart pumps, including the development of drug libraries, implementation challenges, and the collection and analysis of smart pump data to drive IV medication safety improvements.
"B. Braun supports ISMP's commitment to medication error reduction,"
says O'Connell. "ISMP'
