« Étant donné qu'elles se produisent aussi souvent que les attaques cardiaques et qu'elles sont à l'origine de taux de mortalité élevés, les attaques rénales doivent être considérées comme  des urgences médicales aussi graves  que les attaques cardiaques », déclare Dr. Claudio Ronco , directeur du service de néphrologie de l'hôpital San Bartolo de Vicence en Italie. « Cependant, contrairement à une attaque cardiaque, l'insuffisance rénale aiguë est silencieuse et ne présente aucun signe ni aucun symptôme permettant au personnel médical d'évaluer ses risques. Si elle n'est pas détectée ni surveillée, l'insuffisance rénale aiguë peut considérablement endommager les reins du patient, ce qui peut nuire à sa qualité de vie et augmenter son risque de réadmission à l'hôpital, voire entraîner sa mort. »

Dr. Ronco est l'auteur d'un récent exposé sur la gestion de l'insuffisance rénale aiguë en unité de soins intensifs.
