Inoltre, questi biomarcatori forniscono informazioni aggiuntive rispetto alle variabili cliniche ed aggiungono una prospettiva meccanicistica allo studio di AKI , il che li rende ad oggi i marcatori di AKI più promettenti ".

I ricercatori hanno fatto riferimento ad uno studio in due parti che ha inizialmente valutato 340 biomarcatori per scoprire che la combinazione di TIMP -2 e IGFBP7 possiede la più alta correlazione con il rischio di AKI . I risultati della seconda parte dello studio hanno confermato l'utilità di TIMP -2 e IGFBP7 e la migliore capacità di predire di AKI da parte della combinazione dei due biomarcatori rispetto ai biomarcatori esistenti.

"Basandoci su questi risultati, crediamo che il test NephroCheck® potrà essere in grado di aiutare i medici a risolvere una delle più costose, letali e problematiche condizioni che colpiscono i pazienti ricoverati in terapia intensiva", ha affermato Hibberd. "Con le crescenti limitazioni alla spesa sanitaria, strumenti innovativi come il test NephroCheck® saranno essenziali per assicurarsi che le giuste risorse arrivino ai giusti pazienti nel giusto tempo".

AKI è sempre stata associata a maggiori spese di trattamento, specialmente nell'unità di terapia intensiva (ICU). Uno studio del 2008 su pazienti reduci da chirurgia cardiaca pubblicato su Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation ha dimostrato che i pazienti gravemente ammalati senza AKI costavano in ICU $ 13.836 e 1,4 giorni di degenza.  In confronto, i pazienti con grave AKI costavano in ICU fino a $ 49.328 e fino a 5,4 giorni di degenza.
