As Handheld Test Equipment Market Grows, Continues to Adapt to New Market Trends

Southfield, MI (PRWEB) March 20, 2013

The test equipment industry is a fast moving sector as vendors strive to supply test solutions for ever-changing technical requirements. One notable trend is the growth in demand for handheld devices.

Nearly all major brands have introduced new models of handheld test equipment and analyzers. In the past few weeks alone, there have been announcements from Rohde & Schwarz, Anritsu, and Agilent previewing new handheld additions to their existing families of analyzers. New offerings include handheld spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, and 4G & Bluetooth test systems.

The radio communications market is one driving factor behind the explosion in the handheld equipment demand. As cellular communications improves and expands and protocols change and grow, field technicians are more in demand and so are the instruments that best suit their work environments.

Another new technology driving demand for portability is the recent proliferation of fiber optic network installations. This exploding market drives demand for test instruments such as OTDR s (optical time-domain reflectometers), which telecommunication and cable TV companies use to characterize and test fibers. A recent report from ElectroniCast Consultants predicts the global consumption of handheld OTDRs will grow at double digit rates for the next few years., the leading professional marketplace for new and used test equipment, is accommodating the increased demand for handheld devices and advances in technology. Over the last three years Used-Line has seen constant growth of handheld test devices among the 200,000+ equipment listings on its site. Listings on Used-Line, automatically pulled from websites of more than 250 trusted equipment dealers, show new and used equipment available from over 75 dealers worldwide. Handheld was recently added as an oscilloscope subcategory and more handheld subcategories are planned for the near future.

Nathaniel Sperka, customer support specialist at Used-Line, informally polled test equipment dealers to learn more about the handheld trend and how it is impacting the used equipment market.

One executive polled was Jimm Hoffmann, executive partner at Instrument Engineers Inc., a leading Southern California test equipment reseller and distributor.

“Bulky AC powered instruments are clumsy and cumbersome, and may not be adequately protected from the environment. As more applications move into the field, the testing instruments are following,” Hoffmann offered.

“One key area of growth for us has been in the process control and power management arenas where handheld oscilloscopes, power analyzers and recorders have been added to the test tools kits of more technicians. Key brands like Fluke, Extech, and Hioki lead the way in new product introductions. As a result, slightly older, previously-owned versions are available at good cost differentials over new introductions if the customer can live with the older unit’s performance.”
