A Fish a Day to Keep the Cancer Doctor Away?

risk in those taking an alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) supplement or increasing their consumption of fish.

The researchers conclude that their findings have implications for preventing breast cancer by means of dietary and lifestyle interventions.

David W L Ma’s research team at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada found similar results when testing a novel strain of mice. A specially bred type of mice known as fat-1, are able to convert omega-6 fatty acids into omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6s are very inflammatory in the body, which can lead to many diseases including cancer. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties in the body, and have been shown to reduce the development of cancer. The researchers crossbred fat-1 mice with mouse mammary tumor virus mice (MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5), which are used as a model to test aggressive breast cancer. The results in the crossbred fat-1/MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice and the MMTV-neu(ndl)-YD5 mice with a high omega-3 diet were virtually the same: a 30% reduction in tumor size and a 33% reduction in the number of cancer tumors developed. The results were published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry February 2013 titled “Mammary tumor development is directly inhibited by lifelong n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.”

The sixth most common cancer is squamous-cell carcinoma of the mouth. “Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids selectively inhibit growth in neoplastic oral keratinocytes by differentially activating ERK1/2” was published in Carcinogenesis, July 2013.
