Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, responsible for 23% of all cancer cases and 14% of all cancer deaths in 2008. Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Chiropractor and Naturopath Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP relates that while the initial cause of breast cancer is unknown, research suggests that there is a high correlation with dietary habits, especially the types of fat eaten.

A research team led by Duo Li at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China reviewed 26 publications covering 21 independent research studies monitoring women for the development of breast cancer from 4.3 to 20 years. The studies included 20,905 cases of breast cancer among 883,585 individuals up through December 2012. They published their findings in the June 2013 British Medical Journal titled “Intake of fish and marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and risk of breast cancer: meta-analysis of data from 21 independent prospective cohort studies.”

Comparisons of decreased breast cancer risk were done between each of the omega-3 fatty acids along with total fish intake. The risk of developing breast cancer was reduced by as much as 14% in those taking an omega-3 fish based fatty acid supplement, whether eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), or docosapentaenoic acid (DPA). The breast cancer risk was reduced by 5% for each 0.1 gram of omega-3s consumed daily. On the other hand, there was no meaningful decrease in breast cancer
