3D Biomatrix Technology Recognized by NC3Rs 3Rs Prize
Date:3/26/2013

Ann Arbor, MI (PRWEB) March 26, 2013

3D Biomatrix, a leader in three-dimensional (3D) cell culture products, is pleased to announce that the paper first describing the company’s Perfecta3D® Hanging Drop Plates was declared runner up in the National Centre for the Replacement Refinement & Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) 3Rs Prize. The prestigious 3Rs prize is an annual prize for original and recent papers that contribute to scientific and technological advances in the replacement, refinement, and reduction of animals in research.

The Perfecta3D Hanging Drop Plates allow for easy production of spheroids, which are micro-scale 3D tissues that mimic avascular tissues, tumors, and embryoid bodies. Spheroids allow life science researchers to work in an environment that simulates the three dimensions of the human body, prior to animal testing, better than existing two-dimensional (2D) cell culture techniques for early screening and testing. With one spheroid per well, the plates facilitate the formation, culture, and testing of 3D spheroids and stem cell aggregates, including embryoid bodies, in a standard 96- or 384-well plate format without the aid of coatings or matrices. They are easy to use, and cell growth can be monitored regularly. Applications of the plates include cancer research and drug development, toxicology testing, and stem cell research.

The esteemed paper, published in the journal Analyst [1] in 2011, describes the Perfecta3D Hanging Drop Plates and their use in generating spheroids from several cell types. The paper also describes the use of the spheroids to test several anti-cancer drugs directly in the plates. Remarkably, 3D spheroids displayed responses to the drugs that were much more realistic than those of 2D cell cultures. Inclusion of similar experiments i
