$5 million to improve electronic devices
Date:2/4/2013

metals and semiconductors to accelerate innovations in analog, logic and memory devices for the semiconductor and defense industries.

The center includes 35 faculty researchers from 16 universities: UCLA, Columbia, Cornell, UC Berkeley, MIT, UC Santa Barbara, Stanford, UC Irvine, Purdue, Rice, UC Riverside, North Carolina State, Caltech, Penn, West Virginia and Yale.

Balandin, Lau and Liu will focus on van der Waals materials a broad range of crystalline solids with layer structures. The van der Waals materials include graphene, topological insulators and charge-density wave materials. It is expected that this class of materials can be used in future information processing.

Balandin's project is "Phonon Engineering and Energy Conversion in van der Waals Materials." Liu will lead research on "Van der Waals Molecular Beam Epitaxy Growth of Two-Dimensional Layered Material Systems." Lau's project is "Quantum Engineered Collective States in van der Waals Materials."

Lake will lead one of the four thrusts of the center: physics, mechanisms, and device prototyping. His project is "Switching by Voltage Control of the Quantum Phase in Misoriented Layers of van der Waals Materials." Khitun's project is "Magnonic Holographic Memory for Information Storage and Data Processing."
