In the age of the proteome, mass spectrometry (MS) has emerged as a powerful protein identification and characterization tool. Silver staining of 2-D gels is now an important intermediate step in a set of procedures that leads ultimately to identification of specific proteins in the proteome by mass fingerprinting methods. The sensitivity of silver staining and the power of MS for protein identification are the drivers for the most frequently asked question about silver stains, "Is this silver stain compatible with mass spectrometry?" Not all silver stain formulations are compatible with MS, nor are all MS compatible silver stains created equally.
