-Gal is a patented, water soluble, autoclavable chromogenic substrate for -galactosidase. The enzymatic hydrolysis of S-Gal by -galactosidase generates a black insoluble precipitate. Lac+ colonies grown in the presence of S-gal are much darker than those grown in the presence of X-Gal, allowing for easier differentiation between lac+ and lac- colonies.
