Description Mut S is a member of a class of proteins who function to ensure the integrity of the DNA sequence. Mut S plays an integral role in proofreading the nascent strands in DNA replication, in transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair and in preventing chromosomal recombination between different species of bacteria. Mut S binds to DNA specifically at base pair mismatches and small (<4 nt) insertions and deletions.
