Description The LS series of laser scanners is the starting point of the Tecan Gene Expression Suite solution.

Gene expression analysis, SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) analysis and other requirements essential to the advancement of research in the post-genomics era are giving rise to novel microarray formats and sizes. These arrays call for highly flexible scanning technology that allows researchers to automatically scan many different samples on the same equipment without having to switch scanners or make extensive adjustments to a single scanner every time the format type or size changes.

An example of this integrated scanning flexibility is Tecan's new LS Series of laser scanners, which can operate up to 4 excitation lasers and 28 emission filters. In addition to the standard glass array, they can be used to scan a wide range of biochip/microarray substrates, such as membrane arrays, gel on glass, etc., up to the size of microplates. To date, microarrays using these substrates could not be properly scanned with commercial scanners available on the market. The inherent flexibility of the Tecan scanners provides researchers with a useful tool to experiment with different array formats, including new protein and tissue arrays.

Key product attributes:
  • Automation friendly - standard microarray slides are loaded on Tecan's slide holder (patent pending) which has the same dimension as a microplate. This ensures robotic compatibility with most standard microplate equipment. Combining with a robotic manipulator, LS Series laser scanners can read more than 320 slides without user intervention.
  • Flexible - on slide size, array format and dye selection. The instrument has both confocal and non-confocal modes. This enables reading of flexible substrate formats, such as thick substrates, liquid, gel, or even encapsulated chips. The scanner can also read slides of different sizes, from standard microscopic slides up to slides of microplate size. LS series laser scanners can operate with up to 4 lasers (excitation) and up to 28 filters (emission), thus enabling almost unlimited selection of dyes.
  • Fast - simultaneous 2-color scans will shorten measurement time greatly.
  • Automated Data Processing - automatic spot finding, feature alignment and quantification methods only need to be established once by simply macro recording or a wizard-guided procedure. The defined method can then be applied to batch processing.
