Description Drosophila S2 cells are used for heterologous protein expression in the Drosophila Expression System (DES). The S2 cell line was derived from a primary culture of late stage (20-24 hours old) Drosophila melanogaster embryos (1). This versatile cell line grows rapidly at room temperature without CO2 and is easily adapted to suspension culture. S2 cells are available frozen in both serum-containing (Schneider's Drosophila Medium) or serum-free medium (Drosophila SFM).
