"Confronting Influenza: Are We Prepared?" A Symposium Presented by The Howard Hughes Medical Institute and The Center for Strategic and International Studies.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) cordially invite you to attend a symposium on the current state of research, development of prophylactic and therapeutic treatments, and U.S. and global strategies aiming to manage both annual and possible global pandemic influenza outbreaks.

World-renowned speakers will include:

  • Stephen C. Harrison, HHMI Investigator and Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Harvard-Armenise Center for Structural Biology at Harvard Medical School; and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Medicine at Children's Hospital, Boston;
  • Dominick A. Iacuzio, Medical Director at Hoffman-La Roche, Inc;
  • Robert A. Lamb, HHMI Investigator and John Evans Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Northwestern University, Evanston, and Professor of Microbiology-Immunology at Northwestern University Medical School;
  • Peter Palese, Chairman and Professor, Department of Microbiology, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine;
  • Timothy M. Uyeki, Medical Epidemiologist, Influenza Branch, Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
  • Robert G. Webster, Rose Marie Thomas Chair, Division of Virology, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); and Director of the U.S. Collaborating Center of the WHO dealing with the ecology of animal influenza viruses.

    Discussion topics will include the structure of the influenza viral proteins and the relevance of that structure for drug development, lessons learned from the 1918 pandemic, current H5N1 (Avia
