Scientists also use GIS to forecast what land loss may occur in the future, which is critical information for restoration projects that save wetlands. Sand-Tastic Beach Management

Not a Day at the Beach! Scientists and beach managers know it's tough work to keep a beach from washing away. Though South Carolina is known for its beaches, sand is actually a scarce resource there. Scientists from the USGS recently completed a comprehensive study of the geologic features and ocean processes that control sand movement along 62 miles of South Carolina's coast. This information has been used to restore Myrtle Beach and to predict future coastal changes. This study serves as a model for similar efforts all over the country.
