Stago Releases a New Educational Webinar on Venous Thromboembolism Screening and the Role of Laboratory D-dimer Testing to Minimize Unnecessary Imaging Procedures
Date:9/22/2018

VTE can present as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) and, if left untreated, can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. VTE affects between 300-600,000 Americans annually, with approximately 100,000 deaths – a significant number of cases diagnosed upon autopsy. Further, PE is the leading cause of preventable hospital death and maternal mortality. When used with a pretest probability clinical scoring algorithm such as the Wells score, D-dimer is a useful tool to screen patients with suspected VTE. Another use of the versatile D-dimer assay is to determine the length of anticoagulation therapy necessary in a patient with prior VTE, along with assessment of recurrence risk.

Observed on 13 October, World Thrombosis Day is an annual event led by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and celebrated by hundreds of organizations holding more than 9,000 events worldwide. Now in its fifth year, World Thrombosis Day’s focus is Know Thrombosis, which encourages the general public, healthcare professionals, and key decision makers to know the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of the condition. Social media campaigns are a central part of the event, using the #Keeplifeflowing hashtag.

Dr. Stephan Moll, professor of medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, is the speaker for the event. Dr. Moll received his medical degree from Freiburg University. In his current position at UNC-Chapel Hill, his clinical focus is coagulation, particularly thrombosis and thrombophilia. Dr. Moll’s research interests include clinical trials on new anticoagulants, better use of established anticoagulants, antiphospholipid syndrome and post-thrombotic syndrome. He has a major interest in patient and health care provider education on related areas.

LabRoots will host the webinar live on October 12, beginning at 8 a.m. PDT, and it will be available on-demand following the live event. To learn more, discover the continuing education credits offered, or for free registration, click here.
