Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer to Host Leadership Institute Focusing on Professional Development of Women in Cancer Immunotherapy
Date:3/9/2019

On International Women’s Day, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) is pleased to announce a new initiative focused on women in the field. The Women in Cancer Immunotherapy Network Leadership Institute is a one-and-a-half day, free program that seeks to celebrate and empower emerging female leaders in the cancer immunotherapy field.

Scheduled for Aug. 19–20, 2019, in Seattle, the Women in Cancer Immunotherapy Network Leadership Institute will provide a forum for female scientists and clinicians to network with luminaries in the field while exploring topics particularly relevant to them in the workplace, including negotiation techniques, breaking through the glass ceiling, conflict resolution strategies and public speaking. The program, which includes an application process, will be free to attend.

“As the successor to SITC’s first female president, I am privileged to continue and expand our society’s support of women involved with research and development in the laboratory, clinic, industry and all other areas related to immuno-oncology,” said SITC President Mario Sznol, MD.

Championed by SITC Immediate Past President Lisa H. Butterfield, PhD, the Women in Cancer Immunotherapy Network (WIN) is a SITC initiative launched in 2017 that has included annual receptions celebrating women in cancer immunotherapy. The discussions at these receptions have identified strategies to elevate the status of women, both within the society through general leadership roles and faculty opportunities, as well as the field in general.

“As the first female President of SITC, shining the spotlight on the contributions women have made, and continue to make, in cancer immunotherapy and tumor immunology research was a major personal focus,” said Dr. Butterfield. “The Leadership Institute is our society’s next step in providing a professional development opportunity to further support our field’s female researchers and clinicians.”

Women interested in attending the WIN Leadership Institute are encouraged to submit an application by April 15 at 11:59 p.m. EST. The one-and-a-half day program will take place at the Seattle Waterfront Marriott Hotel, 2100 Alaskan Way, in Seattle, Wash. Click here to view a current schedule for this program.
