Prominent Stevia Leaders Win First Ever James A. May Father of Stevia Awards at Global Conference

Awards honor late founder of Wisdom National Brands® makers of SweetLeaf Stevia Sweetener®

Michael P. May, Ph.D., president of Wisdom National Brands, presented prestigious stevia awards to a renowned German professor and a prominent Belgian researcher with the inaugural James A. May Father of Stevia Awards last month at the World Stevia Organization’s 8th World Convention on Stevia in Berlin. The award was named for the late James A. May, founder of Wisdom Natural Brands® and SweetLeaf Stevia®, the world’s most trusted stevia brand.

Prof. Gertrud Morlock from Justus Liebig University in Germany was given first place for her presentation on an analysis of steviol glycosides and iso-steviol in stevia products. Dr. Koenraad Philippaert from VIB-KU Leuven Center for Brain & Disease Research in Belgium won second place for his presentation on steviosides related to the prevention of diabetes in mice.

“My father spawned a global industry when he brought stevia to the United States from Paraguay in 1982,” said Michael May, who gave an overview of James May’s lifetime work during the WSO convention. “He was committed to helping people enjoy a better quality of life through improved health by using the means nature provided. He broke down barriers to the use of stevia as a sweetener and championed its acceptance and growth worldwide.”

“Jim loved the little stevia plant and the potential it could offer people around the globe to make more healthful choices in their diets and still enjoy great taste and quality of life,” said CEO Carol May. “We are honored to carry forward his visionary legacy and ‘to make the world a sweeter place,’ the mission that focused and impelled his work for over 35 years.”

Known as the Father of Stevia, James is widely recognized for his contributions to the natural and organic sweetener industry, including being the first to bring stevia to the U.S. in 1982. His passion and laser-focused journey to share and promote the healthful benefits of stevia resulted in the worldwide launch of better-for-the-body sweeteners with no sugars, no calories, and no artificial ingredients. James started his business in his garage in Scottsdale, Arizona, and today, SweetLeaf products are sold throughout North America in natural and conventional grocery stores, online retailers, and in more than 30 countries.
