OilComm 2019 Confirms Ben Reiter of Sports Illustrated and Astroball as Keynote Speaker
Date:5/31/2019

The OilComm Conference & Exposition, held October 2-3, 2019 at the Houston Marriott Westchase in Houston, TX, announced today that Ben Reiter, Senior Writer at Sports Illustrated and Author of Astroball, will deliver a keynote address on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 3rd.

Reiter predicted the Houston Astros would win the MLB championship in 2014 when they were the worst team in the league because he saw they were utilizing data science and previously unseen analytics to transform their organization. Reiter’s book Astroball is the inside story and inspiring account of how the Houston Astros applied this next wave thinking to win it all in 2017.

At OilComm, he’ll provide insight on how MLB organizations have converted to a data-first mentality to become successful organizations. Attendees will learn how the oil & gas industry can implement and embrace new data science strategies to transform systems and business processes to help improve your own operations.

“Astroball masterfully articulated how astonishing results can be when human and technological insights are applied correctly. There’s a lot of uncertainty about how oil & gas organizations can properly apply data sciences with human strategies,” said OilComm’s show director Michael Conti. “I’m excited for Mr. Reiter to provide insight and stories about what he’s seen from the MLB world, and how it can be applied to the energy industry.“

As a journalist, Reiter has also contributed to Time and The Village Voice, among other publications. Reiter’s SI feature ‘The Seeker: The Complicated Life and Death of Hideki Irabu’ won the 2018 Deadline Award for Magazine Profile, and his work has twice been named a notable selection in the annual The Best American Sportswriting series.

To celebrate the announcement, OilComm will gift a copy of Astroball to the next 50 registrants, to be signed on-site by Mr. Reiter at OilComm. Professionals who work for E&P companies, EPCs, drilling contractors, commercial maritime, transportation, and rig owners, are eligible to attend the OilComm Conference & Exposition for no cost.

OilComm’s two-day conference will be led by technology leaders with expertise on the digital revolution that’s transforming the industry, so companies are better prepared to handle future market demands. Program sessions will cover IT/OT convergence, cyber-security, automation, immersive technologies, SD WAN, defining LTE, and more.
