NASP and ASCP Discuss Future of Specialty Pharmacy in Aging Market at Upcoming ASCP Conference
Date:5/10/2013

TAMPA, Fla., May 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The National Association of Specialty Pharmacy™ (NASP™) and the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) announced today that representatives from the organizations will start discussions about the role specialty pharmacy plays within the aging market during the upcoming ASCP Spring Conference in Orlando, May 14 – 17, 2013.

"Treating patients in a senior care setting is not without its challenges, but the fact is that the use of specialty drugs is on the rise within this market and as the population ages we will see this trend increase," Gary M. Cohen , BSPharm, RPh, NASP CEO, said. "NASP offers a centralized location for specialty pharmacy education and certification curriculum that will allow practitioners to expand their knowledge and skill to meet the needs of these patients."

The increase in the use of specialty drugs is well documented in the aging population.  A 2013 Managed Health Care Associates (MHA) Independent Long Term Care Member Study showed growth in prescription count among specialty categories within long-term care pharmacies from 2011 to 2012 which included:

  • 5 percent increase in the utilization of oral oncology medications
  • 8 percent growth in the use of medications to treat multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • 14 percent increase in the use of injectable osteoporosis medications
  • 15 percent increase in the use of medications to treat HIV
  • 27 percent increase in biologics used to treat inflammatory conditions

"We are excited to start discussions with NASP about optimally meeting the needs of seniors with regard to specialty medications, and how this may affect ASCP members, as well as other senior care pharmacists," Vera Jackson , PhD, ACSW, ASCP's Executive Director & CEO said.

The 2013 ACSP Spring Conference + Exhibition offers attendees the opportunity to discuss these, and other, issues facing the aging population in detail with leaders from all sectors of the industry. Conference highlights include the Opening General Session on May 14 at 2:30pm, followed by the Exhibit Hall opening, and ASCP's Kick-Off Reception.  Additional topics of interest include medical marijuana, pharmaceutical waste disposal, and family caregiving.

NASP, founded in 2012, represents specialty pharmacy professionals in all practice settings and highlights the unique value its members bring to patients and the healthcare system.  Specialty pharmacy is the fastest growing segment in the industry today and NASP provides valuable benefits to members by creating a strong, unified voice for all stakeholders.

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists empowers pharmacists to enhance quality of care for all older persons through the appropriate use of medication and the promotion of healthy aging. ASCP offers online education focused on continuing professional development in geriatrics at their in-house learning site, the Professional Development CEnter, available at education.ascp.com.
