Lintec announces exclusive license to commercialize innovative carbon nanotube technology from the University of Texas at Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas, Feb. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Lintec of America recently announced an exclusive license to commercialize novel fabrication methods for carbon nanotube (CNT) macrostructures, including sheets, yarns and ribbons, developed at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD).

Leveraging the vast industrial resources of the global Lintec Group, headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Lintec of America is forming the Nano-Science and Technology Center (NSTC) in Richardson, TX, focusing on scaling up the manufacturing and commercialization of nano engineered applications.

"Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the potential to spark the next industrial revolution", said Kanzan Inoue, Lintec NSTC Managing Director. "Among the strongest and most thermally conductive materials discovered to date, CNTs are stronger than metal and more thermally conductive than diamond. However, applying CNTs into practical applications requires fast and controllable processing methods capable of retaining the unique properties of individual CNTs in large areas and volumes."

Inoue added that a critical factor for controllable device fabrication is the ability to assemble CNTs in different forms, such as freestanding, rolled, or deposited onto a substrate.

"The technology created at UTD, and trademarked by Lintec as DryDraw™ and cSilk™, delivers an efficient and elegant solution to these key issues." Inoue said.  "It enables applications requiring strong, yet lightweight materials, which combine thermal and electrical conductivity, transparency, uniformity, purity and flexibility."

Enabling Wide-Ranging Applications

Recent research demonstrates promise for an expanding range of applications, from aerial and underwater sound projectors, to lightweight biocompatible materials for biomedical solutions."

cSilk™'s unique morphology enables the deployment of thermoacoustic transduction technology into unique applications, including thin, flexible, highly transparent loudspeakers, tunable sound projectors for high power sonar arrays, sound cancellation technology, and wide-band transducers for bio-inspired unmanned underwater vehicles.

Innovative Biomedical Applications – Scaffolds on which to grow cells

Studies show cSilk™  to be an effective substrate to support long term growth of several cell types, ranging from skin fibroblasts and Schwann cells to postnatal cortical, cerebellar neurons and Chinese hamster ovary cells. These findings show high promise for innovative biomedical applications, including tissue engineering, wound healing, neural interfaces and biosensors.

DryDraw™and cSilk™

DryDraw™ is Lintec's advanced solid state fabrication process, which produces cSilk™, a versatile range of CNT macrostructures, including sheets, tapes and yarns. This unique dry state self-assembly process employs proprietary CNT forests with optimized morphological characteristics. Unlike traditional processing methods involving liquids/powders, DryDraw™ retains the extraordinary properties of individual CNTs, delivering superior alignment, density control and transferability, without limitations on sheet width or length.  The fast, continuous and highly reproducible process eliminates issues such as liquid dispersion and compatibility with matrix materials.

  • cSilk™ CNT sheets are transparent, flexible, thin, pure, and lighter than air. Highly anisotropic and multifunctional, cSilk™ sheets can be twisted into yarns, kept freestanding, or transferred onto a substrate.
  • Novel multifunctional materials and composites can be created, utilizing cSilk™ as a substrate for depositing a multitude of otherwise difficult to process micro and nanoparticles.
