Leibniz Prizes 2014: DFG honors 11 outstanding researchers

an assistant physician at MHH, in 2004 he joined the research team at the renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher as part of the DFG's Emmy Noether Programme. After returning to Germany in 2008, he continued his work as a leader of an Emmy Noether and a Helmholtz independent junior research group, turning down several invitations from institutions in Germany and abroad. In 2012 he accepted a post at the University Hospital Tbingen, where he now leads the section for translational gastrointestinal oncology. He has received several awards for his work, most recently the respected German Cancer Award.

The Leibniz Prize

The Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize has been awarded by the DFG since 1986. A maximum of ten prizes can be bestowed annually, each with prize money of 2.5 million euros. With the ten prizes for 2014, a total of 320 Leibniz Prizes have been conferred. Of these, 106 were awarded to researchers in the natural sciences, 94 in the life sciences, 70 in the humanities and social sciences, and 50 in engineering sciences. The number of award recipients is higher than the number of awarded prizes because, in exceptional cases, the prizes and money are shared. Accordingly, a total of 346 nominees have received the prize: 304 men and 42 women.

The Leibniz Prize is the most significant research prize in Germany. Six past prizewinners have subsequently received the Nobel Prize: 1988 Prof. Dr. Hartmut Michel (Chemistry), 1991 Prof. Dr. Erwin Neher and Prof. Dr. Bert Sakmann (Medicine), 1995 Prof. Dr. Christiane Nsslein-Volhard (Medicine), 2005 Prof. Dr. Theodor W. Hnsch (Physics), and 2007 Prof. Dr. Gerhard Ertl (Chemistry).

Awards Ceremony

The 2014 Leibniz Prize award ceremony will take place on 12 March 2014 at 3:00 pm at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin. A separate invitation will be sent to members of the media.
