Leibniz Prizes 2014: DFG honors 11 outstanding researchers
Date:12/12/2013

This news release is available in German.

The new recipients of Germany's most prestigious research prize have been announced. On Thursday, 5 December 2013, the Joint Committee of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) named eleven researchers four women and seven men as winners of the 2014 Leibniz Prize. The recipients of the prize were selected by the Nominations Committee from 129 nominees. Four of the eleven prizewinners are from the engineering sciences, three from the humanities and social sciences, another three from the life sciences, and one from the natural sciences.

Nine of the prizewinners will receive 2.5 million euros each, while two will share one prize, each receiving 1.25 million euros. The winners can use the prize money to support their research work, without bureaucratic hurdles, for a period of up to seven years. At the first presentation of the prize in 1986, this unusual flexibility was described by Professor Hubert Markl, then President of the DFG, as "idyllic freedom", which has since become the motto for the Leibniz Prize.

The award ceremony for the Leibniz Prizes will be held on 12 March 2014 in Berlin.

The following researchers will receive the 2014 funding prize in the DFG's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Programme:

  • Prof. Dr. Artemis Alexiadou, Linguistics, University of Stuttgart
  • Prof. Dr. Armin von Bogdandy, Public Law and International Law, Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg
  • Prof. Dr. Andreas Dreizler, Combustion Research, Technical University of Darmstadt

and

  • Prof. Dr. Christof Schulz, Combustion and Gas Dynamics, University of Duisburg-Essen
  • Prof. Dr. Nicole Dubilier, Marine Ecology,
