Seamless Integration of Palm Vein Authentication Technology with Single-Sign On Solutions Cost-Effectively Bolsters Security and Compliance

Efforts by Eliminating Passwords

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., a leading supplier of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced the availability of the PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR, a new addition to identity management solutions that combines Fujitsu's PalmSecure biometric authentication technology embedded into a PC mouse, and software that seamlessly integrates with any vendor's single sign-on (SSO) solution. By combining highly accurate, non-intrusive identification technology with SSO connectivity, the LOGONDIRECTOR eliminates the need to remember passwords, providing both the SMB and enterprise market with a stronger user authentication solution to bolster security and facilitate compliance with HIPAA, SOX and other industry regulations.

"There is a definite need to move to a more efficient and secure form of user authentication rather than simply inputting passwords in the SMB and enterprise sectors," said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc. "The PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR eliminates the need to remember countless passwords and provides companies with a superior form of strong authentication technology and significant time and cost savings."

Passwords present numerous problems for companies from both a security and cost perspective. "Shoulder surfing," a common practice where perpetrators steal passwords by looking over the shoulder of the victim, poses a critical threat for identity theft. Moreover, IT departments traditionally spend numerous hours re-assigning new passwords to employees who forget their log-in information, which translates into cost that often exceeds thousands of dollars annually.

The PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR addresses threats posed by shoulder surfing by requiring users to authenticate themselves using the palm vein scanner, rendering password information virtually useless for a would-be hacker. By enabling a SSO mechanism to gain entry into a Windows session and any password-protected applications, the LOGONDIRECTOR also eliminates the need for employees to remember passwords to access their PCs or laptops, saving the IT helpdesk a substantial amount of time and money. This is equally beneficial when deprovisioning accounts. When an employee leaves a company or is terminated, the IT department has just one credential to delete, thereby reducing the costs of deprovisioning old passwords and preventing the exiting employee from using these accounts to access proprietary systems and information for nefarious purposes.

"Our customers continually express the need for more robust methods of user authentication, and the Fujitsu PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR certainly fits the bill. It offers the benefits of highly accurate biometric identification with the cost-effectiveness and ease-of-use associated with SSO solutions, eradicating the numerous problems associated with passwords," said Grady Johnston, president, Tiburon Enterprises, LLC. "We are extremely pleased to be able to offer Fujitsu's solution as part of our security portfolio, as it will serve as an enhanced offering for our SMB and enterprise customers. This new offering will be of particular interest to our healthcare customers looking to secure computers that are accessed by multiple hospital staff members. The PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR ensures that each new user is only given access to pre-approved programs and data."

The Fujitsu PalmSecure sensor uses a near infrared light to capture a person's palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against pre-registered users' palm vein patterns. LOGONDIRECTOR offers an encrypted repository for storing users' palm vein templates, and integrates with Active Directory to enable a more streamlined identity management process. This advanced, vascular pattern recognition technology provides a highly reliable form of authentication that is unmatched by any other biometric offering available today. The PalmSecure LOGONDIRECTOR-available in both stand-alone and enterprise versions-is compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems, as well as Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2003 servers.
