Experts discuss climate change during UH lecture series
Date:9/25/2008

HOUSTON, Sept. 25, 2008 Noted energy and environment experts are participating in an eight-part lecture series at the University of Houston, addressing the implications of climate change for the world and for the Houston area.

"The Science and Policy of Climate Change" lecture series is free and open to the public and is held from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays through Nov. 17. The series started this week and is being held in room 101 of the Cameron Building on the UH campus. No registration is required. For a map, visit http://www.uh.edu/campus_map/buildings/CAM.php.

Part of the College of Technology Fall Futures Lecture Series started last year by Peter Bishop, well-known futurist and associate professor of strategic foresight, this year's series shifts its emphasis from energy to climate change. Joining Bishop this year is Barry Lefer, assistant professor of atmospheric science in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, who assembled an impressive group of guest speakers to address what can be done both globally and locally to slow down climate change, as well as adapt to its effects.

The schedule of lectures is as follows:

  • Sept. 22: Effects and implications of global warming; Robert Hariss, President and CEO of Houston Advanced Research Center
  • Sept. 29: Stabilization wedges and framework categories; Ron Sass, professor emeritus of chemistry at Rice University
  • Oct. 6: Economics of energy production and emissions; Ed Hirs, economics lecturer at UH
  • Oct. 20: Carbon emissions, capture, sequestration; Darrick Eugene, attorney at Vinson & Elkins, and Michael Moore, managing partner of Falcon Environmental Services, a division of Falcon Gas Storage that owns and operates underground gas storage facilities
  • Oct. 27: Non-carbon electricity production hydro, nuclear, geothermal, renewables (wind, bio, solar, marine
