EPA to highlight innovative ways to detect and respond to biological threats
Date:3/20/2012

DENVER, CO U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emergency response and bio-threat experts and researchers will be presenting the results of an interagency biological response exercise conducted last year. This exercise was done in collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Department of Defense. Results of sampling and analyses, decontamination efficacy, waste management, and remediation costs will be highlighted. Additionally, water infrastructure researchers and professionals will present recent advances in detection systems, sensor location tools and other innovations enhancing water security.

EPA will also be presenting information on lessons learned from recent participation in a wide-area, urban incident planning exercise. The Agency's National Decontamination Team will discuss its response capabilities that support consequence management following a biological incident. An overview of EPA's Environmental Response Laboratory Network's and Water Security Initiative's contributions to securing the nation's drinking water will be presented.
