DigitalPersona Fingerprint Sensor Technology Ships on IBM SurePOS 500 Retail Systems
Date:12/16/2009

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- DigitalPersona, Inc., a leader in fingerprint identity and authentication solutions, today announced an agreement with IBM to deploy a new model of its DigitalPersona biometric fingerprint technology on IBM SurePOS 500 retail systems. The DigitalPersona U.are.U® 4500HD offering allows point-of-sale applications to more easily and quickly identify users so that specific transactions can be linked to the individuals who perform them. Biometrics is increasingly being used in point-of-sale environments to increase accountability, simplify provisioning and speed up service or purchase transactions.

"Customers are looking for fingerprint biometrics that can be used in a variety of point-of-sale environments," said Jim Fulton, vice president of marketing at DigitalPersona. "By integrating the U.are.U 4500HD with the IBM SurePOS 500 as well as its Modular POS Keyboards, IBM is able to offer retailers and restaurateurs more flexibility in deploying fingerprint-enabled applications to deter fraud and improve operations."

IBM is using the embedded version of the U.are.U 4500HD fingerprint sensor. This heavy-duty, ergonomically-designed fingerprint sensor offers a powerful combination of size, accuracy and performance for handling hard-to-read fingerprints and is resistant to physical and chemical abuse in commercial environments. In addition, its discreet, blue illumination provides a professional appearance for restaurants and retail stores.

The IBM SurePOS 500 is available from IBM through its worldwide network of resellers and solution providers. POS applications that support the fingerprint sensor on the IBM SurePOS 500 are available from a variety of independent software vendors. Software development kits for adding fingerprint biometrics to custom applications on Windows and Linux are available from DigitalPersona at
